Cairn of Barnenez
About
Located on the scenic Kernelehen peninsula in Brittany, the Cairn of Barnenez is a breathtaking Neolithic monument that stretches 72 m across and rises 8 m high. Composed of over 13,000 tonnes of granite and dolerite, the tumulus encloses 11 chambers carved into the stone, offering visitors a tangible glimpse into Europe’s earliest megalithic culture. The cairn’s imposing presence—often referred to as the “Prehistoric Parthenon”—and the intricate engraved symbols that adorn its walls make it a must‑visit landmark for history enthusiasts and families alike. Visitors can explore the site under the guidance of a trained docent or opt for a self‑guided tour. Guided visits begin at 10 a.m. and run for one hour, while autonomous visits last 45 minutes, both requiring advance reservation by email or through the online booking portal. The Centre des Monuments Nationaux welcomes groups of all sizes, including social field groups, teachers, and film crews, and offers special rates for partners, EU residents, and other concessions. The entrance fee is €7 for adults, with free admission granted to children under 18, EU‑resident youth aged 18–25, disabled visitors, job seekers (presenting a recent certificate), and the first Sunday of each month from November to March. Prices vary slightly for partner organisations and corporate guests. Sample tickets can be purchased online or at the visitor centre located at 111 Route du Cairn, Presqu’île de Kernelehen, 29252 Plouezoc'h. Open year‑round—except Mondays, 1 January, 1 May, and 25 December—the cairn offers flexible visiting hours that change by season: 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.–5:30 p.m. from 1 April to 30 April, 2 May to 30 June, 5 September to 30 September, and 1 October to 31 March; a single extended window from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the peak holidays of 1 July to 4 September. Early‑morning visitors are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before closing time for the last entrance.
