Le Lieu Unique
About
Le Lieu Unique, located in the heart of Nantes along the Canal Saint‑Felix, began its life as a LU biscuit factory in the late nineteenth century. In 2000 the historic building was reborn as a national centre for contemporary culture, offering an eclectic mix of visual arts, theatre, dance, circus, music, literature and digital culture. Today it occupies 8 000 m² of adaptive space that houses eight performance halls, a large outdoor terrace and the iconic stone tower that once shrouded the factory. The venue is renowned for its fearless programming, open‑to‑experimentation ethos and collaborative work with artists across disciplines, making it a dynamic hub for both local creators and international visitors. From season‑long exhibitions to experimental music festivals, winners of the Fondation BNP Paribas, and intimate theatre pieces, Le Lieu Unique continually reshapes the cultural landscape of Nantes. Visitors can enjoy a café‑bar, a restaurant, and a multipurpose “Salon” that hosts talks, workshops and residencies, all connected by a modern, airy architecture that preserves the industrial heritage of the original factory. The centre’s mission is to foster artistic exploration and intercultural dialogue, reflected in its support programmes that nurture artists’ careers through residencies, exhibitions and funding. This commitment to experimentation and community engagement positions Le Lieu Unique as one of Europe’s leading contemporary arts centres.
