Musee de la Romanite
About
The Musée de la Romanité, tucked opposite the ancient Arena of Nîmes, is a dazzling blend of archaeology, architecture, and interactivity. Designed by Elizabeth de Portzamparc, its glass‑clothed façade and interior multimedia installations bring the layers of Nîmes’ history to vivid life. Visitors wander through four chronological chambers that chronicle everything from the pre‑Roman era to the present day, each supported by immersive projections, interactive maps and tangible artifacts. Beyond the permanent exhibition, the museum hosts rotating shows such as the 2025‑2026 “Gaulish but Roman” exhibition that pairs Roman artefacts with nationally curated masterpieces. Guests can also explore the rooftop terrace, offering panoramic 360° views of the city, the Mediterranean‑style garden, a bookstore‑boutique, and a bistro‑style restaurant overlooking the Arena. The museum’s commitment to accessibility and family engagement is evident in its free admission on the first Sunday of each month (except July and August) and a range of guided tours, flash talks for students, and interactive workshops that invite visitors of all ages to connect with Nîmes’ layered heritage.
