Grotte du Mas d'Azil
About
The Mas d’Azil cave is a geological marvel perched above the village of Le Mas‑d’Azil in the Ariège department. Its vast chambers are illuminated by modern lighting that reveals the traces of early human life, from ancient bone deposits to the murals of early human cultures such as Aurignacian, Magdalénien, and Azilien. Visitors walk through a fascinating interpretive centre, enjoy a 1‑hour guided tour that brings archaeological digs to life, and then explore the 1½‑km‑long, adjacent prehistoric museum that holds a rich collection of tools, sculptures, and even the famous ‘faon aux oiseaux’ bone‑carved faun. The cave's majestic 70‑metre‑high façade, its surrounding river, and the proximity of the museum create a complete prehistorical experience ideal for families, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Access to the cave is via 288 steps, so visitors with mobility challenges are advised to plan accordingly. The museum opens from 11 AM to 12:30 PM and 2 PM to 6:30 PM in July and August. Guided tours depart every hour, and the final tour must be finished at least one hour before closing. A combined ticket includes cave entry, interpretive centre, and museum access. With its blend of natural wonder and rich prehistoric artefacts, the Mas d’Azil cave offers a unique, educational adventure that brings the ancient past to life for visitors of all ages.
