About

The Royal Opera of Versailles, or Opéra Royal de Versailles, is the main theatre and cultural hub of the Palace of Versailles, France. Designed by Ange‑Jacques Gabriel and completed between 1765 and 1770, the oval‑plan auditorium showcases exquisite 18th‑century architecture and interior décor, including faux‑marble wooden walls, grand Corinthian columns, and a magnificent ceiling painted by Louis Jean‑Jacques Durameau. With a capacity of 712 seats—expandable to 1,200 when the orchestra level is raised—the venue is celebrated for its superb acoustics and versatility, hosting operas, ballets, concerts, and even ballroom events. Since its restoration in the mid‑20th century and a comprehensive renovation that finished in 2009, the opera house has continued to serve as a prominent venue for both state functions and artistic performances, drawing visitors who appreciate historic grandeur, remarkable craftsmanship, and the cultural heritage of the French monarchy. Beyond its architectural splendor, the theatre has played a pivotal role in French cultural history. Inaugurated on 16 May 1770 with Lully’s “Persée,” it has hosted significant political and artistic events, including royal ceremonies, state functions, and international performances. Today, it remains a testament to Versailles’ artistic legacy and a cornerstone of French opera and musical tradition.
