Forteresse de Salses
About
The Forteresse de Salses is a magnificent 16th‑century military fortress perched on a peninsula between lush lagoons and the rugged Corbières hills. Built by the Crown of Aragon to defend the frontier with France, the fortress features a unique mix of medieval stone walls and modern engineering, making it a living testament to the evolution of fortifications. Visitors wander through six levels of stone ramparts, archery towers and a great cross‑section of artillery pits, guided by expert historians who bring the fortress’s storied past to life. Interactive exhibits, themed workshops, and daytime guided tours make the site accessible to all ages. Opening hours are from 10:00 to 18:30 between April and September, and from 10:00 to 12:45 and 14:00 to 17:15 between October and March. Admission costs 7.50 € for an individual ticket, with free entry for those under 18 and for 18‑25‑year‑olds from EU member states or regular non‑European residents of France.
