About
Château de Castelnou, also known as the Château Vicomtal, is a striking medieval fortress perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the village of Castelnou in the Pyrénées‑Orientales. Its irregular pentagonal layout, dating back to the 10th century, reflects its historic role as the administrative and military seat of the Viscount of Vallespir. After falling into ruin through centuries of conflict, fire and neglect, the castle was lovingly restored in the 20th century by the Brousse family. Today visitors can wander its stone corridors, explore vaulted cellars and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, making it a must‑visit destination for history lovers, hikers and travelers seeking a taste of classic Provençal heritage.
