Chateau de Josselin
About
Château de Josselin is a magnificent Breton fortress perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Oust valley, where towering granite spires and a fluted granitic façade showcase the finest late‑Gothic and early‑Renaissance architecture. After centuries of military, courtly and civil use, the castle has been meticulously restored in the nineteenth century and is still home to the Rohan family. Visitors can wander through stately rooms and exquisite decorated halls, enjoying a mix of medieval and renaissance furnishings and artworks that chronicle Brittany’s history. Beyond the castle walls, the estate boasts three expansive gardens: a formal French garden with centuries‑old boxwood parterres, a grand English‑style park with a wide rosary of 40 rose varieties, and a scenic English garden. The gardens are complemented by a 3‑hectare landscaped park with a small stream, a rose garden, historic follies, and a visitor‑friendly layout open to all people. The château also houses the Musée de Poupées et de Jouets, home to a private collection of over 5,000 items, including Breton costume dolls, Japanese dolls, and miniature toys. The site offers guided, theatrical, and free visits with an inclusive ticket that grants access to the castle, gardens, and the puppet museum. Recommended visit length is about one and a half hours, and the castle is especially family‑friendly and appealing to history and garden enthusiasts.
