Musée Soulages Rodez is a contemporary art museum dedicated to the extensive works of French painter and engraver Pierre Soulages. Born from the generous donation of a 250‑piece collection by Soulages and his wife Colette in 2005, the museum has grown with three further contributions in 2020 and 2023, making it home to the artist’s most comprehensive oeuvre from the early 1930s to the present day. The 1 700‑square‑meter space, designed by RCR Arquitectes and completed in 2014, blends innovative architecture with a warm, light‑controlled ambience that highlights Soulages’ mastery of black and luminosity. Visitors can explore permanent galleries of painted canvases, paper works, printed art, and preparatory cartoons for the famed Conques stained‑glass panels, as well as temporary exhibitions that broaden the museum’s artistic palate. A two‑hour visit is recommended to fully appreciate the layers of the artist’s practice and the thoughtful curation that guides each corridor. The museum’s Visitor Centre, housed at the entrance, offers a first‑hand look at the collection’s history and includes a library‑shop where catalogues, monographs, and museum‑branded souvenirs are on display. The design emphasizes free, self‑guided tours, but the museum also offers guided walks, children’s activities, and educational workshops to enhance the experience for families, history enthusiasts, and art lovers alike.
