La Cite de L'Huitre
About
La Cité de l’Huître is a unique museum tucked into the rolling greens of the Marennes‑Oléron oyster marshes, France’s largest oyster‑maturing lagoon. Visitors glide between four vibrant, themed cabins – the Green, Blue, Red and Yellow cabins – that illustrate every step of oyster cultivation, from hatchery to harvest. A crystal‑clear film, "Entre Terre et Mer", plays in a specially designed projection room, immersing guests in the dramatic landscape of the Seudre estuary. Hands‑on activities are aplenty: kids learn to catch crabs, create herbariums, and paint oyster shells, while adults can taste the freshest freshly‑opened oysters and sample classic Marennes‑Oléron mussels in the on‑site restaurant. The site is open year‑round, with extended hours in the summer months (10 : 00‑19 : 00 from July to August) and regular hours of 10 : 30‑18 : 00 from Wednesday to Sunday. A stroll through the museum’s well‑crafted displays, an interactive ride to learn oyster raising, a tasting of the local produce, and a serene view from the panoramic terrace combine to create a memorable day celebrating the culture, ecology, and culinary traditions of France’s beloved oyster region.
