About

Cap Fréhel is a dramatic peninsula in the Côtes‑d’Armor department of Brittany, jutting out into the Bay of Saint‑Malo. From the town of Fréhel, about 8.5 km away, the cliff‑lined coast rises to meet the Atlantic, offering sweeping panoramic views of the iconic Côte d’Émeraude. Administratively part of the commune of Plévenon, the area is largely uninhabited, its landscape dominated by rugged moorland and marshes that preserve a sense of wild, untouched beauty. At the tip of the cape stand two lighthouses: a 17th‑century beacon built on a granite platform, and a modern 1950s steel structure that continues to guide vessels along the treacherous coast. The lighthouses, together with the surrounding cliffs, provide a dramatic backdrop for hikers, photographers and history enthusiasts alike. In 2024, an offshore wind farm 16.3 km from the headland was completed, its thirty‑two turbines visible from the cliffs and sparking debate among conservationists. This largely rural site is a popular destination for day‑trippers, climbers, and whale‑watching tours, and offers a quiet escape from the bustle of nearby towns. Visitors can enjoy long, uninterrupted walks along the cliff edges, discover local legends about the former 'Cavendish' stage of the Tour de France, and contemplate the changing landscape as wind energy meets marine heritage.
