Font-de-Gaume Cave
About
The Font‑de‑Gaume cave, located near Les Eyzies in the Dordogne valley, is one of the world’s most remarkable open prehistoric sites. Dating from the Magdalenian period, it houses over 230 polychrome paintings and engravings of bison, horses, mammoths, reindeer and other fauna. The cave’s artistic achievements span two distinct stylistic phases of the Magdalenian, reflecting the creative life of upper‑Paleolithic hunters. Visitors embark on a guided tour that highlights the most evocative artworks, such as the famous bison frieze, the dynamic horse engravings and the haunting mammoth carvings. The guided visit, held in daylight hours and lasting around 30 minutes inside the cave, offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of its ancient occupants.
