Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette
About
Nestled atop the picturesque Mont Saint-Clair, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette offers visitors a serene blend of history, art, and breathtaking vistas. Built on the site of an old fort and semaphore, the chapel traces its origins back to 1864 when it was dedicated by the Missionaries of La Salette, following the intriguing Marian apparition that inspired the name. Inside, visitors encounter modern frescos – a 1952 masterpiece by local painter Jacques Bringuier – that enliven the interior space with vibrant color and spiritual symbolism. The chapel’s location grants an unobstructed panorama of the vibrant city of Sète and the surrounding Bay of Thau, making it a popular destination for both contemplative pilgrims and photography enthusiasts. Each month, on the 19th, a modest pilgrimage gathers at the chapel, with a particularly significant event on 19 September. Beyond its religious significance, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette is a cultural landmark that showcases the region’s artistic heritage while welcoming visitors free of charge, allowing anyone to experience its historical depth and serene atmosphere without a financial barrier.
