About

The Barrage Vauban, also known as the Vauban Dam, is a historic 17th‑century bridge and defensive structure that spans the River Ill in Strasbourg, France. Built between 1686 and 1690 on plans by the famed military engineer Vauban, the stone arch bridge is 120 m long and features 13 limestone arches. Today it serves as a cultural landmark rather than an operational lock, offering a panoramic terrace overlooking the picturesque Petite France district and the medieval Ponts Couverts bridges. Visitors can stroll through the enclosed corridor, view a lapidarium with plaster casts of statues from the Strasbourg Cathedral and Palais Rohan, and enjoy free admission from 9 AM to 7:30 PM daily. The site is a popular destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and families alike, blending military heritage with scenic river views.
