Basilique Saint-Pie X
About
The Basilica of Saint Pius X – often called the Underground Basilica – is a striking modern Catholic church situated within the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in the French town of Lourdes. Completed in 1958, it was designed to accommodate the enormous crowds drawn by the Marian apparitions, making it the largest church in the sanctuary with a capacity of up to 25,000 worshippers. The basilica’s architecture is a bold, concrete structure that sits partially below ground, its oval nave rising gently toward a low vaulted ceiling supported by 58 pre‑stressed concrete pillars that create the impression of an upturned ship. Inside, visitors encounter a remarkable array of stained‑glass mosaics in the gemmail style, depicting scenes from the life of Bernadette Soubirous and the Stations of the Cross, along with the 15 traditional Mysteries of the Rosary. The combination of innovative design, expansive capacity, and richly symbolic art makes the basilica a must‑visit for pilgrims and architectural enthusiasts alike. Beyond its religious significance, the basilica offers a unique spiritual experience grounded in modernist architecture, providing a space for reflection amid the bustling pilgrimage landscape of Lourdes.
