Fort Douaumont, perched on the high grounds northeast of Verdun, was the largest and highest fort in France’s defensive ring built in the late 1800s. The fort famously fell to German forces in 1916 after a silent raid, becoming a pivotal symbol of the grim Battle of Verdun.
