Michaelsberg Abbey
About
Michaelsberg Abbey (Kloster Michaelsberg) is a former Benedictine monastery perched on one of Bamberg’s seven hills. It dates back to 1015 and has played a central role in the city’s religious and cultural life for over a millennium. The abbey’s impressive baroque terraces, expansive gardens, and the historic abbey church—now undergoing extensive renovation—make it a true landmark within the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Town of Bamberg.” Today, visitors can wander the charming baroque gardens, stroll along the picturesque Panoramaweg, and enjoy sweeping views of Bamberg’s cobblestone streets from the hilltop terrace. While the abbey church is closed to the public due to ongoing restoration, its striking exterior and the surrounding cloister grounds remain accessible at all times, offering a unique glimpse into centuries of monastic architecture and landscape design. The site is free to visit, with no entrance fee required. The foundation’s Stiftsladen with café and info centre, located in the inner courtyard, offers a brief respite and a chance to learn more about the abbey’s history, upcoming events, and the ongoing restoration efforts. Parking is limited on site, so visitors are encouraged to use public transport or walk from nearby bus stops.
