About

The Deutsches Historisches Museum (DH M) stands at the historic heart of Berlin in the desolate 17th‑century Zeughaus on Unter den Linden and the adjacent I.M. Pei–designed exhibition hall. Since its 1987 inauguration it has been Germany’s national historical museum, shaping the country’s narrative from the Prussian era to the present day. Its permanent exhibition – German History in Images and Artifacts – invites visitors to trace German identity through interactive galleries that span politics, everyday life, technology, and warfare. The museum also hosts a vibrant programme of temporary exhibitions, film projections in the Zeughauskino, an encyclopedic research library, and a vast digital catalogue (LeMO). In 2020 a new documentary centre—“Second World War and German Occupation in Europe” (ZWBE)—was established, offering immersive presentations on the impact of World II and occupation across Europe. Together these offerings make the DH M a dynamic hub for history, educational outreach, and cultural dialogue in Berlin’s Mitte district. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the museum maintains accessibility facilities and provides free and ticketed entry options, but exact pricing is available at the onsite ticket desk. The museum encourages visitors to stay for at least two hours to fully absorb its layered exhibitions and downloadable audio guides.
