About

Located at the heart of Berlin’s historic Potsdamer Platz, the Sony Center—now called The Center Potsdamer Platz—stands as a striking example of contemporary urban design. Opened on 14 June 2000, the complex features eight architecturally diverse buildings that house a mix of shops, restaurants, a large conference center, a boutique hotel, residential apartments and office space. The centerpiece is the expansive Forum, a vaulted square covered by a 4,000‑square‑meter glass and steel roof that creates an open yet protected gathering spot. The bold, cyber‑punk aesthetic of the center was conceived by German architect Helmut Jahn, with Peter Walker as landscape architect. The building’s iconic umbrella‑shaped roof—engineered by Waagner‑Biro—provides a dramatic visual landmark that contrasts with Berlin’s historic skyline. In addition to its architectural significance, the Sony Center has played host to major cultural events, including the Berlin International Film Festival, and its wide‑area grid of walkways quietly reflects the city’s blend of old and new. Today visitors can immerse themselves in a dynamic urban experience. The complex offers a range of retail shops, eateries, and the Legoland Discovery Centre, as well as a former Museum of Film and Television which moved to a new location in 2025. Free Wi‑Fi is available throughout, and the Forum roof offers a unique spot for both casual strolls and large public gatherings. Though the cinemas closed in 2019, the Sony Center remains a key destination for both locals and tourists seeking modern architecture, nightlife, and a vibrant pocket of the city.
