Zoo am Meer
About
Zoo am Meer, situated in Bremerhaven, is a compact yet strikingly diverse marine‑centric zoo that opened its doors in 2004 after a comprehensive redesign. Spread over approximately 12 000 m², it showcases almost 300 animals from cold‑water and northern habitats, ranging from polar bears, sea lions, fur seals and arctic foxes to penguins, turtles, snakes and even a handful of chimpanzees, pumas and birds. Visitors can wander through naturalistic habitats, watch daily feeding demonstrations of penguins and sea lions, and explore an adventure playground for children. The layout emphasizes accessibility, with most viewing terraces and walkways reachable by wheelchair while a few elevated terraces remain inaccessible. Since its origins as a North Sea aquarium in 1913, Zoo am Meer has evolved through several phases, culminating in the 2000–2004 expansion that gave the current, “themed zoo by the sea” character. Its architecture blends wet‑land landscapes with scientific exhibits, creating an engaging narrative of how these species thrive in the wild. Behind the scenes, a permanent attraction remains a new aquarium under construction, promising to host even more aquatic life. You can easily plan your visit by noting that feeding times are posted at the entrance, and the park’s large playground makes it a family‑friendly destination. With most of the visitor area designed for accessibility, families with strollers, wheelchairs or prams are encouraged to explore the majority of the zoo without hindrance. Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting, as the cooler temperatures keep the cold‑water species comfortable and crowds are thinner than the summer peak.
