Old Nicholas Church (Alte Nikolaikirche)
About
The Old St. Nicholas Church (Alte Nikolaikirche) in Frankfurt’s historic Römerberg square is a beautifully preserved medieval Lutheran church that blends centuries of history with vibrant contemporary life. Its stone walls cradle a soaring nave, a stunning nave cross (Nagelkreuz) taken from Coventry, and richly coloured stained‑glass windows designed by Lina von Schauroth. Inside, visitors are greeted by an evocative South‑German organ—crafted in 1992 by Gebr. Oberlinger and Prof. Dr. Reinhardt Menger—which, together with the impressive 1,200‑bell carillon, offers regular free concerts and chimes that lace the service times. Guided tours, available throughout the week, take groups through five key stations, including the altar, choir loft, and historic seals, providing a concise yet thorough overview of the church’s art, architecture, and religious heritage. In addition to worship services, the church hosts a calendar of concerts, choir events, and even a carillon‑concert in the winter months, making it a cultural hub for both locals and visitors alike.
