Wank Mountain
About
Mount Wank stands proudly in the Austrian border region of southern Germany, rising to 1,780 m above sea level. Nestled in the Loisach Valley, the mountain offers a gentle summit plateau that rewards visitors with sweeping views of Garmisch‑Partenkirchen, the Zugspitze, and the Wetterstein range. The Wankbahn cable car, which has been in operation since 1929, is the most popular way to reach the top. Travellers board the car at 8:45 am on clear days and enjoy an 18‑minute ride that takes them to the summit station, where the Wank‑Haus and a scientific observatory await. At the summit, guests can admire the cross and the panoramic vista, explore the well‑maintained pathways, or relax in the children’s playground, which offers natural play structures for families. The mountain’s alpine charms are complemented by the Sonnenalm breakfast venue, open daily from 9:00 am, offering hearty regional fare. Beyond the summit, Mount Wank is a haven for hikers and trail‑running enthusiasts, offering easy trails suitable for families, seniors and nature lovers. A small camp site near the cabling car provides 100 pitches with modern facilities, making it a perfect weekend get‑away for those seeking a blend of adventure and comfort.
