Deichstrasse
About
Deichstraße literally means 'dike street' and is the oldest preserved street in Hamburg's Altstadt, running alongside the Nikolaifleet in the historic Speicherstadt. The narrow row of timber‑framed houses dates from the 14th century and offers a vivid walk through Hamburg's maritime past. After surviving the devastating Great Fire of 1842 and two world wars, the street was rescued by the 'Rettet die Deichstraße' foundation, which restored the buildings and now hosts guided tours and cultural events. Visitors can enjoy a free stroll, or book a one‑hour guided walk led by local historian Frau Karin S. von Behr, who provides insightful commentary on the street's architecture, history, and ongoing preservation efforts.
