About
The Karl Theodor Bridge, affectionately known as the Old Bridge, is a striking sandstone arch bridge that gracefully spans the Neckar River in the heart of Heidelberg. Erected between 1786 and 1788 by Elector Charles Theodor, the bridge replaced a succession of wooden trusses that had been lost to ice and floods, and its nine majestic stone arches rise 7 metres high. With its picturesque castle‑like gatehouses and the familiar monkey statue, the bridge remains a beloved landmark, offering visitors sweeping views of the Neckar, the historic Old Town, and the iconic Heidelberg Castle above. It is a perfect spot for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and casual walkers alike.
