Rathaus-Glockenspiel
About
The Rathaus‑Glockenspiel is a monumental carillon and clock housed on the front façade of Munich’s New Town Hall. Since 1908 it has been enchanting visitors for over a century with its life‑size figures and mechanical music. Every day the clock brings to life two historic scenes: the majestic joust of Duke Wilhelm V and the lively Coopers’ Dance. The 43‑bell mechanism can be seen most days at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m., with an extra performance at 5 p.m. from March to October. In addition to the spectacle, the square itself—Marienplatz—is a vibrant hub of cafés, shops and historic monuments, making a visit to the Glockenspiel an essential Munich experience for every traveler. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a family looking for a brief cultural stop, or a music lover curious about one of the city’s most famous mechanical clocks, the Glockenspiel offers a quick yet memorable window into the heart of Munich’s past. A watchful golden rooster at the top of the tower adds a charming finale to each performance, signaling the end of the show with a gentle crow.
