Porta Nigra
About
The Porta Nigra – the largest and best‑preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps – is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must‑visit landmark in Trier, Germany. Built in 170 AD from grey sandstone, the gate originally featured twin four‑storey towers and an inner courtyard. Over the centuries it evolved, serving as a town entrance, a monastery, a church and finally a museum. Today visitors can walk through the upper and lower churches, climb the western tower, and explore the fascinating Roman interior. Guided tours are offered, often presented by a costumed centurion, and the site is open daily from 9:00 to 16:00 (summer season extends to 18:00). With both free admission for children under six and affordable adult tickets (€6), the Porta Nigra offers a memorable glimpse into ancient Roman engineering and Trier’s historic heritage.
