Odontotos Rack Railway
About
The Odontotos Rack Railway, officially known as the Diakopto–Kalavryta railway, is a 22‑kilometre heritage line that climbs 720 metres from the coastal town of Diakopto to the mountain village of Kalavryta. The route is renowned as the steepest rack railway in Greece, employing the 19th‑century Abt system to navigate the narrow 750 mm gauge track through the dramatic Vouraikos gorge. The journey takes roughly two hours and ten minutes, giving travelers a unique chance to glide past waterfalls, towering cliffs and a series of enduring tunnels. Along the way passengers encounter historic railway infrastructure: a Victorian‑style steam locomotive, the former “Madame Hortense” and a range of preserved diesel‑electric units, all lovingly maintained to give a living snapshot of Greece’s rail heritage. Stopping at key stations such as Mega Spileo—adjacent to the ancient Mega Spilaion monastery—and Zachlorou, visitors can step off the train to explore the surrounding villages and natural landmarks. The line is fully integrated into the wider Greek rail network, with direct connections from Diakopto to Athens via the new standard‑gauge Athens‑Airport‑Patras railway. This makes the experience accessible to both day‑trippers and over‑nighters, and enhances the appeal for those seeking a brief escape into the mountains. Daily departures are available, but frequencies vary by day and season. Visitors are encouraged to check the official timetable in advance, especially during the holiday months when services can be limited and crowds larger.
