About

Nisyros is a small, volcanic island in the Aegean Sea, part of Greece’s Dodecanese archipelago. The island covers about 41.6 km² and features an impressive 3–4 km wide caldera, with the largest crater, Stefani, dominating the landscape. Although the volcano is currently dormant, fumaroles and steaming vents can still be seen at the shore of the caldera, offering an atmospheric backdrop for visitors. The island’s main settlement, Mandraki, is a charming port where visitors can board ferries or boats to explore the surrounding villages of Paloi, Nikia and Emporeios. The landscape blends rocky coastlines and a few sandy beaches, allowing for gentle hikes, seaside walks, and opportunities to spot local wildlife. Because tourism infrastructure is modest, the island attracts a mix of nature lovers, hikers and those seeking a quiet, authentic Greek escape. Unlike many larger islands, Nisyros remains relatively undeveloped, which preserves its pristine natural beauty. The best experience is to arrive in late spring or early autumn, when the weather is warm and the crowds are sparse. Whether you’re climbing the volcanic rim, strolling through the wharves of Mandraki, or simply soaking in the tranquil sea views, Nisyros offers a memorable blend of geological wonder and tranquil island life.
