We would like to welcome you to “L’artos”, a restaurant with historical character. It was built in 1939 and influenced by three architectural cultures; Greek, Italian and Arabic. “L’artos” has sentimental value to us, as it was built by my grandfather Vasilis. Due to its imposing character, this building was used as headquarters during the Italian and German occupation. Later on, when it returned to my grandfather’s possession, it operated as a family tavern where my grandmother and father used to work. In time the tavern was passed down to my parents and consequently to me (Vasileia, as I am named after my grandfather) to continue our family tradition. “L’artos” is named in honour of our village Lardos, which was known as Lartos in ancient times. As a consequence the marble produced in the area was named “Lartios Lithos”. This grey marble stone was used by ancient Rhodians for statue carving. The boat shaped base of the famous “Winged Victory of Samothrace” which is displayed today in the Louvre Museum, is also made out of this marble, “Lartios Lithos”. L’artos = λᾱρός + ἄρτος λᾱρός means tasteful, sweet, fragrant, beauteous, beloved ἄρτος means bread or wheat bread It is a great honour for us to continue our family’s tradition.
