Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina)
About
The Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai in Vergina, Greece, is an archaeological complex that opens its underground galleries to visitors every day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except on Tuesdays when it is closed. It was inaugurated in 1997 after years of excavation and houses the burial cluster of Philip II of Macedon, along with the tumuli of other Macedonian kings and the royal burial cluster of the Temenid dynasty. The museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its rich collections of gold, bronze, and ivory artifacts that illustrate the transition from the classical to the imperial period of ancient Macedonia. Visitors experience the royal tombs, the royal palace, and a semi‑open‑air exhibition of sculptures found in the city sanctuaries, offering a comprehensive view of Macedonia’s ancient heritage.
