About
The Souda Bay War Cemetery, administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is situated on the southern coast of Crete near Souda Bay, 5 km east of Chania. The site contains 1,564 graves, including 731 Second‑World‑War burials and 19 from the First World War, as well as 776 unidentified graves from the Battle of Crete. Designed by architect Louis de Soissons, the cemetery is a solemn tribute to the Commonwealth servicemen who lost their lives in the Mediterranean theatres. It remains open to the public, free of charge, and serves as a poignant reminder of the region’s wartime history.
