Palia Kavala Waterfall
About
To reach the beginning of the trail, follow the road to Palea Kavala. 300 meters after the Zygos intersection, on the right, there is a dirt road onto which we must turn. We continue on the (good) dirt road for 1000 meters and, after passing a pond, we end up at a crossroads in front of an old quarry. Following the left branch, and with the abandoned quarry on our right, we climb for another 500 meters, where the road ends and the path begins. Wide and easy to pass, it follows the slope, while the water makes its presence strong from the first moment, with its purr echoing from the depth of the ravine. In ten minutes we come across the most characteristic point of the route, an impressive waterfall that we can approach with a minimal detour. The waterfall splits in two, with one part reaching 6 meters. The water, carving the rock for years, has created two deep blue pedestals on two levels, ideal for swimming in the summer months. Returning to the path, we go uphill and cross the first wooden bridge. The rest of the way, we are under the tall plane trees of the stream, which we will have to cross five more times on picturesque wooden bridges. The vegetation is spectacular, with ivy and sycamores covering the trunks of the sycamores, creating real images of a small jungle. In the summer, the sun's rays hardly penetrate the dense foliage, and in combination with the flowing water, they maintain the feeling of coolness even in periods of heat. On the path we will come across the ruins of several water mills. After traveling 2.5 kilometers (after about 1.5 hours), we reach the first houses of Old Kavala and the central asphalt of the village.
