About

Ancient Falassarna was located at the western tip of Crete and was a significant naval power in the trade routes of the western Mediterranean. The city is mentioned in ancient sources, such as Pseudo-Skylax and Dionysius Calliphontis. Founded in the Minoan era, it flourished in the 4th century BC with strong fortifications and coinage. It was destroyed by the Romans in 67 BC during Metellus' campaign against piracy. Excavations since 1966 have uncovered the harbor, the city, and its cemetery, shedding light on the history of Falassarna.
