Gialiskari beach
About
Gialiskari Beach, also spelled Gialiskari or Gyliskari, lies just 4 km east of Paleochora village on the Libyan Sea coast of southwestern Crete. The area is a cluster of three small bays that flow into a shallow, pebbled shoreline, offering calm water that is especially pleasant during calm days and ideal for swimmers, snorkelers, and families with children. The beach sits on a clean, well‑maintained stretch of sand and rocky outcrops and can be reached via a short dirt path that winds from the main coastal road. Visitors frequently remark on the beach’s serene atmosphere, its clean waters, and the absence of crowds compared to the more popular neighboring beaches such as Pahia Ammos or Votsala. Gialiskari’s rocky coastline gives it a unique character that makes it a favorite spot for those who enjoy a quieter, more intimate beach experience. The surrounding landscape features typical Cretan scrub, olive groves, and a gently rolling hills, contributing to a picturesque backdrop for sunset walks. The beach is publicly accessible, welcoming sunbathers of all ages. While there are no paid entry gates or campsite fees, nearby Paleochora does provide modest amenities such as cafes, tavernas, and small beach huts that can be rented from local vendors. The tide remains relatively mild throughout the year, but visitors are advised to check local conditions during the windy months of October and November.
