Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes
About
The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes—often called Kastello—is a striking blend of medieval fortification and ornate Gothic architecture that dominates the heart of Rhodes Old Town. Originally a 7th‑century Byzantine citadel, it was transformed by the Knights Hospitaller in the 14th century into the administrative centre and ceremonial palace of the Order’s Grand Master. After a period of decline and damage—including a lightning‑induced explosion in 1856—the palace was meticulously rebuilt between 1937 and 1940 under Italian rule, restoring much of its original medieval character while re‑creating fortified walls and courtyards. Today the palace welcomes visitors to a curated experience: guided tours, self‑guided audio guides, and two permanent exhibitions on the ground floor that chronicle Rhodes’s history from the early Christian era through the Ottoman conquest. The exhibits, housed in restored chambers, showcase architectural fragments, mosaics, and everyday objects that paint a vivid picture of life across five centuries. The combination of historic architecture, archaeological artefacts, and immersive storytelling makes the palace a must‐visit destination for history buffs and casual tourists alike.
