Tunnel of Eupalinos
About
The Tunnel of Eupalinos is a remarkable ancient aqueduct tunnel that stretches 1,086 meters (about 3,560 feet) through Mount Kastro on the island of Samos. Built in the 3rd century BC, it is one of only two tunnels in history that were excavated from both ends and met in the middle with astonishing precision—an incredible engineering feat of the ancient world. Located approximately three kilometres northwest of the modern town of Pythagoreio, the tunnel originally supplied water to the city and is today a popular archaeological attraction. Visitors walk through a cool, dimly lit gallery of stone arches, and the site is part of the UNESCO‑listed “Pythagoreion and Heraion” World Heritage area, making it a must‑visit for history enthusiasts and architecture lovers alike.
