Gorge of the Dead
About
The Gorge of the Dead, also known as the Ravine of the Dead, is a dramatic limestone canyon that cuts through the eastern hills of Kato Zakros in Lasithi, Crete. The site is part of the larger Minoan archaeological complex of Zakros, one of the six major palatial centers of the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. Visitors can walk along scenic pathways that wind through fossil‑filled caves, emerge at cliffs overlooking the turquoise Aegean, and discover the impressive ruins of a mid‑Minoan palace that once served as a hub of trade and administration. The gorge’s steep cliffs contain numerous burials, many of which have been catalogued, and the surrounding landscape bears the marks of prehistoric human activity, including Linear A inscriptions and a rare pithos with a wine inscription.
