Koja-Orman Forest
About
The Delta of Nestos occupies a large area in the southern part of the Prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi. The transported materials deposited by Nestos in the estuaries and the sea currents that prevail in the area, formed the small lagoons of Vassora, Erateino, Agiasmas, Kokala, Keramoti and Monastiraki - all in the western part of the Delta with a total area of 16,000 acres (Kavala Prefecture) . In the Eastern part of the Delta (Xanthi Prefecture) extensive areas of sand dunes and periodic wetlands dominate. Nestos 4X4. The wealth of wild life is great - even though in 1953 the only wetland forest in Europe, the famous Great Forest (Kotza Orman), was cleared in the river Delta. Mammals such as wild boars, wolves, jackals, otters, badgers, foxes, weasels and ferrets. However, the region is still particularly rich in birdlife: 254 species of birds have been recorded in the Delta of Nestos. Among them rare and endangered species worldwide such as the Silver Pelican (Pelecanus crispus), the Mallard (Aythya nyroga), the Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis), the Spotted Eagle (Aguila clara), the Golden Eagle (Aguila heliaga), and the Kestrel (Falco naumanni) . The area is a unique area for research, observation, and information about the functioning of natural water ecosystems, the structures and the principles that govern its operation. Projects such as the creation and operation of Information Centers for the Riverside Forest of Nestos, the creation of guided paths, the restoration of native vegetation, the re-flooding of certain parts outside the river bed, but also the permanent protection of the ecosystem, are only the beginning in a effort to study, preserve and restore the unique natural water ecosystem.
