About

The Roman Forum of Thessaloniki is an ancient Roman‑era public square and forum located on the upper side of Aristotelous Square in the heart of Thessaloniki. The site is a two‑terraced complex originally built in the 2nd century AD, featuring double‑storey stoas, two Roman baths—one excavated and the other buried under the city—and a modest theater that once hosted gladiatorial games. Although its roots predate the Roman occupation, the forum was largely refurbished by Roman architects and continued to serve as a civic and religious center well into the 6th century. Today the ruins, surrounded by an archaeological museum, offer visitors a tangible glimpse into the city’s Hellenistic, Roman and early Byzantine past.
