About

The Palace of Faistos, also known as the Minoan Palace of Knossos, is one of Greece’s most significant archaeological sites. Situated on a hill overlooking the fertile Meso Valley, the palace complex spans approximately 18,000 square meters and is the second largest, after the Palace of Knossos. The site reveals layers of Minoan history, from its earliest construction in the early second millennium BCE to its dramatic fire around 1700 BCE and subsequent rebuilding. Visitors can explore a wide array of rooms and courtyards designed for royal living, commercial activity, and ceremonial purposes, including the famed “Great Theatre” in the western section, the revered “Temple of the Mother” (Megalai Mētera), and the impressive throne room. Archaeologists have uncovered an abundance of artifacts ranging from pottery and frescoes to the iconic “Discus of Faistos,” a glazed ceramic disc dating to the 7th century BCE, which exemplifies the sophisticated artistry of the Minoans. The palace’s architecture—featuring a multi-level courtyard, vaulted galleries, and intricate stonework—offers insight into the advanced engineering of the time. The palace is open to visitors year-round, with seasonal hours that accommodate the region’s climate. Admission is €15 for adults and €8 for reduced‑rate visitors. Contact the Heraklion Archaeological Service by phone or email for up-to-date visiting information.
