New York Cafe
About
The New York Café is a historic coffeehouse and restaurant tucked inside Budapest’s elegant Anantara New York Palace Hotel, an architectural gem in the city’s golden 7th district. Originally built in 1894 as the office of the New York Life Insurance Company, the Belle‑Epoque façade was designed by Alajos Hauszmann, Floris Korb, and Kálmán Giergl. After surviving war damage and a period of communist nationalization, the building was restored in 2006 and returned to its original name, hosting the café that has long been a cultural hub for Hungarian poets, writers, and artists. Inside, the café’s lavish interior showcases the 16 dramatic devilish fauns that adorn the walls, together with polished marble and crystal chandeliers that create an opulent, yet inviting atmosphere. The original décor has been meticulously preserved, giving visitors a sense of stepping back into the roaring 20‑scented salons of early 20th‑century Europe. Today the New York Café serves an eclectic menu that blends traditional Hungarian fare—such as goulash and chimney cake—with contemporary international dishes. Open from breakfast through late‑night, it is a destination for locals and tourists alike who seek a taste of Budapest’s storied café culture, world‑class service, and the chance to enjoy a slice of history amid a striking setting of art, music, and fine dining. Enjoy a coffee at Stendhal or sip a cocktail at the Bar Ambari while surrounded by classic portraits and gilded mirrors that have welcomed generations of Budapest’s elite.
