In 1183 a monastery was founded on gentle slopes at a junction of two rivers on infinite fields in western frontier strips of land... Today SZENTGOTTHARD is a settlement at a junction of the River Raba and Lapincs and also it is a Hungarian-Austrian-Slovenian crossborder taking care of three nations' culture, traditions and inhabitants. The most western town is ours in Hungary, which is the ,,gate"of the youngest National Park, the Orseg. Our life used to be shaded by the gloomy line of the Iron Curtain throughout decades, but nowadays we are pleased to be proud of our small region with its untouched natural beauties due to historical heritage and varied ethnographical and architectural elements. The River Raba basin, Harsas Lake, the Vend-region and scattered settlements typical of only this region await you with having so many surprises in store. In the heart of the Orseg woods you will be captured by ,,pine-smelling peace"!
