Hallgrimskirkja
About
Hallgrímskirkja, located on the hilltop Skólavörðuholt in Reykjavík, is not only the largest church in Iceland but also a prominent symbol of the city’s national identity. Designed in an expressionist style that echoes Iceland’s rugged basalt landscapes, the church’s soaring 74‑metre tower offers a sweeping 360° vista of Reykjavík, the surrounding mountains, and the Atlantic Ocean. Inside, the nave and sanctuary complement the tower’s dramatic exterior, featuring a rich interior program that includes an organ, a statue of Jesus, and a bell tower housing a carillon of 29 bells. The church serves as both a place of worship and a tourist attraction, with regular services, concerts, and guided tours. Visitors to the tower experience an unobstructed panoramic view from the viewing deck, accessed via a lift that opens from the church base.
