About

On the museum grounds in Glaumbær, you have the opportunity to visit an old turf farm, built of turf, rocks, and wood. The turf farm gives a glimpse into the lives of Icelanders in the 19th and early 20th century. There are also two 19th century timber houses on the museum grounds, which host a café, and several smaller exhibitions. Glaumbær Turf Farm is believed to have stood on the same hill since the settlement of Iceland. The present buildings vary in age, the most recent additions having been built in 1876-79, while the oldest are believed to have been preserved much as they were in the mid-18th century. In Áshús, a yellow timber house built in 1884-86, the museum café can be found, where you can taste traditional pastries and soup, and have a hot or cold beverage. On the top floor in Áshús are several smaller exhibitions. In Gilsstofa, a gray timberhouse built in 1849, there are exhibitions on both floors.
