About
The Lava Tunnel, officially Raufarhólshellir, is Iceland’s fourth-longest lava tube, extending 1,360 metres under the landscape near Reykjavík. After a full renovation in 2017 that installed a protective walkway and lighting, the cave is now only accessible via guided tours, offering visitors a safe, immersive journey into volcanic geology and microbial life. Visitors are treated to the stunning glow of skylights, towering stalagmites, and the atmospheric ambience that once made the site a backdrop for films such as Noah and the series Sense8.
