Great Blasket Island
About
Great Blasket Island – nestled in the Atlantic just off the Dingle Peninsula – is Ireland’s most westerly island and the centerpiece of the Blasket archipelago. Abandoned in 1954 after the loss of the last resident family, the island has since been resurrected as a living museum. Visitors can wander through restored stone cottages, the historic home of writer Peig Sayers, and the reconstructed house of Tomás Ó Criomhthain, all while enjoying tales of a once‑thriving fishing community. The island now offers guided tours, an on‑site café, and a seasonal cottage‑stay experience that lets guests live like the islanders did, without modern conveniences. With the state owning the majority of the land, Great Blasket is accessible to the public from April to October, providing a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and a quiet retreat from mainland life.
