About

Scattery Island, also known as Inis Cathaigh, lies in the heart of the Shannon Estuary just off the coast of Kilrush in County Clare, Ireland. The island’s crown jewel is a medieval ruined monastery founded by Saint Senan in the 6th century, surrounded by an iconic Irish round‑tower and a holy well. Over the centuries the island unfolded a layered history—from Viking raids and an 18th‑century artillery battery built during the Napoleonic wars, to a lighthouse guarding the approaches to the harbor. Today the Office of Public Works manages a small visitor centre that offers interpretative displays, guided tours, and regular maintenance of the island’s historic ruins. A short ferry or private boat ride brings visitors to the island; most tours and transport arrangements must be booked in advance and the attraction is usually free to enter, though some boat operators levy a small fee to cover transport and level‑elevation.
