About
Castle Rushen stands as one of the best‑preserved medieval castles in the British Isles, built about 800 years ago for a Viking king. The imposing fortress spans the heart of Castletown, soaring above the market square and harbour. Visitors step over a classic drawbridge into a keep whose three‑foot‑thick walls echo the fortress’s defensive legacy. Inside, the castle reveals layers of history: a Victorian prison cell, the Treasury—a once‑most secure room on the island—, authentic medieval music performances, and colourful wall‑hangings depicting mythical creatures. The site offers a fully accessible ground floor and is open to the public during the March to October season, though it is currently closed until March 2026.
