Tempio di Ercole
About
The Temple of Hercules (Tempio di Ercole) is the oldest and most complete monument in the Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Sicily. Erected in the early 6th century BC, the Greek temple was built over an earlier structure and is celebrated for its perfectly preserved Doric columned façade. Though only half its original columns survive, the arrangement still evokes the grandeur of ancient Hellenic architecture. Visitors enter through a Doric staircase that leads to a rustic courtyard, where the temple’s stone pedestal and altar set the stage for the rituals of the past. The site combines architectural splendor with natural beauty: the ruins sit amid Mediterranean scrub and cypress trees, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and sea. Guided tours explain the temple’s construction, cultural context, and the archaeological work that has revealed its hidden layers. Today the Temple of Hercules remains a must‑visit destination for historians, archaeologists, and travelers seeking a tangible link to the ancient world.
