In the beginnig it was a convent then it became a fortress. To remember this Monastero Bormida Castle still has it's bell tower. The actual building has a '600 front and a '500 lodge on the back which you can visit. It belonged first to Carretto family, then to Della Rovere and Polleri. Now it is property of the municipality.
